International Sabu Varkey captained Mumbai in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament at Chennai from July 16 to 25. Mumbai finished runners-up in the tournament losing 0-3 to Indian Airlines.
The dazzling inside-right performed splendidly in 1997, scoring well at the National Games, National Championship and the Federation Cup. He started 1998 well with the Indo-Pak hockey series, but the World Cup was a disappointment, where the entire Indian forward line failed. Varkey has 75 international matches behind him.
Sabu Varkey works for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. in Mumbai. Internationals Sandeep Somesh and Ravi Nayakar are his teammates at BPCL.
