Goalkeeper Warming Up
- Warm up with and without equipment
- Include a session of weight training and speed training
- Have a skipping session to improve footwork and leg strength
Specific Drills for the Goalkeeper
- Footwork, step ups, various types of leg splitting exercises, using the
toe to the maximum level
- Skipping, jumping, kicking football and medicine ball for upper body
strength
- Gold ball hitting on the wall, for vision training
- Short sprints, backward runs, various types of shuttle runs (like
forward/backward/side run etc.)
- Cross leg running, front rolls diving (both sides)
- Tennis ball hits with hockey stick and tennis racquet, jumping for aerial
ball
Skills Training
- Before starting on a skill, explain the importance of that particular skill
- Use string diagrams to face direct shots
- Train on handling of air balls and its clearances
- Train on diving on both sides, and the use of either hands or stick as per the situation
- Emphasise the importance of horizontal goalkeeping, i. e., train on lying down and getting up on the feet with the shortest time
- Too many skill practice in a single day is not good, change the skill once
he/she is through with the earlier one
Physiological Study
- Explain the importance of concentration, pay extra emphasis if the
goalkeeper is weak in concentration
- Habitual resting habits to be avoided, explain the importance of hard work
and no pain-no gain
- Participation of defenders, perception of the next action and rebounds
- Avoid/minimise injuries during training
- Ask the goalkeeper to observe his/her counterpart working under the bar to
learn the good points and rectify the mistakes
Buildup of Goalkeeper Confidence
- Check their choice in playing kit. Are they confident from the kit
provided to them or used by them?
- Find out if they wish to have any special training method
- Be sure they do not have any inborn weakness
- Keep a check on discipline and personal habits
- Build up their confidence level if found distressed after losing/playing
bad in a game
- Good rest for recovery after a hard training to be insisted
- Emphasise the goalkeeper's importance - a good performance from them would
give good result for the team
