In 1948, war-ravaged England was just beginning to re-emerge. With many countries winning their independence, the cliche 'the sun never sets on the British Empire' was no longer tenable.

The Britons were in a phase of reconstruction. Yet they did an excellent job of organizing the London Olympics at such short notice.

Those were the days of strict rationing in England. Disciplined as they always are, Britons never took more than what was necessary for each person - this gave us an insight into the British character.

It was at the London Olympics that Pakistan made its debut. The Indian and Pakistani teams were billetted at different places. They met each other only at the ceremonial opening of the games at Wembley Stadium.
