I am a hockey player from Hyderabad. I captained the Osmania University hockey team. I feel Dhanraj Pillai should play till the 2004 Athens Olympics. He is still a superb player in the country. No one can match him in terms of speed and skill. In the recently concluded 2002 National Games in Hyderabad, Dhanraj's performance was outstanding. The way he dodged the Punjab players in the final was delightful. After the match, it was very nice to see Dhanraj coming towards the spectators and shaking hands and giving autographs. Dhanraj is truly a great player. I wish him and the Indian team a successful New Year and good luck for the Olympics.

It's a pity that our national game does not have enough funds to improve playing conditions in India. We should have more turf fields, better sports gear for players, and all the things that will make India get back the glory days of Dhyan Chand.

To promote hockey in India, media promotion is very very crucial. Per my interaction with my friends, I believe there are hundreds of people in India who are ready to support hockey and give monetary help if approached. So the Indian Hockey Federation should take the initiative to reach out to people through the media, and ensure more financial input for our national game.

Trying to make hockey as popular as cricket in India is a classic chicken-and-egg situation. Unless and until hockey is viewed by a television audience at least half the size that watches cricket, hockey will NOT get the required levels of financial support from the sponsors. And unless the sport gets financial support, it is difficult to get India's best young sportsman to play hockey.

Sports fans love leaders and world-beaters. Unless the people have faith that India can beat the best in hockey, they we will not watch the game on television. Recognising these basic issues, it is entirely up to the Indian Hockey Federation to manage and plan for betterment of Indian hockey.

Before 1983 cricket was not what it is now. Everybody knows how Indian cricket built up on personalities after the World Cup victory - Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and now Sachin Tendulkar. The Indian media is searching for the successor of Tendulkar, and I can assure you it will not be hard to make a cult figure out of an Indian cricketer.

I would like to share an incident with you. When I was in Germany during a summer internship, I was living in a kind of hostel with German students. One day we went to play football. As usual we were in slippers. One of our friends, Paul, saw this and told us "I know you people love to play barefoot, but do come with shoes on because of dangers of broken glass on the field". Needless to say, he was referring to famous incident of the barefooted Dhyan Chand playing in the second half of 1936 Berlin Olympic hockey final, which saw India beat Germany 8-1.

I am a great fan of hockey. My brothers are also hockey players. Firstly, I would like to congratulate coach Rajinder Singh for putting Indian hockey on the world map. Without his services, the Indian team could not have reached such heights. Victory in two back-to-back tournaments in Australia and Germany is a great morale booster for the upcomin Champions Trophy and the Olympics.

The coach is making the players work hard in the areas of defence and opportunism in the goal scoring zones. One of the finds of twin tours is the splendid performance of the junior players. These players are giving their best in each match, and their real test will be in Champions Trophy. I hope the team will surely bring home a medal. This is the team of future, the morale of the team is high and the players have the killer instinct in them. I think there should be no changes in the squad till the Olympics

Veteran Mukesh Kumar's performance was poor in Australia. I think he has difficulty in adjusting with junior players and the coach, hence he should be sidelined otherwise the morale of the team will go down.

Coach Rajinder is doing a great job by giving a chance to youngsters. With a legend like Dhanraj in their ranks, I think the present Indian team has the potential, power, stamina, skill, daring and guts to beat any team in the world. All the best to India, hope you will not repeat the Sydney 2000 Olympics mistake this time. Good luck to Rajinder and company.

The idea behind Junior National Hockey League and the conference names that you have chosen are really superb.

The Indian diaspora, especially in the United States, are used to such a format and many would love to subscribe to the appropriate TV channels to see some of the matches. So you would also have a possibility to sell broadcast rights outside India and generate additional revenue.

The last 7 minutes of the India - Holland match are still showing effects on the Indian team, as they achieve a new low. Most of the players had forgotten the basics after the first 63 minutes of that match. I was foolish enough to think after viewing the first 63 minutes of that first match that this is the new turning point in the Indian hockey, but I was wrong.

No off-the-ball running, no fast movement of the ball, and except for Baljeet Saini, the midfield is virtually nonexistent. No. 6 does not believe in passing the ball unless he has been surrounded by 3-4 opponents, and then hits directly to them. Dileep Tirkey believes in letting the whole world know 10 seconds before hitting the ball by keeping his stick high in the air, and waits for opponents to cover the forward line and then hits to their sticks. The other fullback Kanwalpreet Singh is getting slower with every match.

Someone forgot to tell the midfielders that the more quickly they relay the ball, the better chances they have of catching the opposing defence on the wrong foot. Viren Rasquinha was responsible for 1 stroke and many unneccessary penalty corners. Please convey to him that he is supposed to win penalty strokes and penalty corners for India, not for the other teams. When in crisis, every player thinks that he can take on the whole of the opposite team on his own, and just forgets that there are other players at appropriate positions waiting for the ball to be passed.

This is the second time in two years that India has lost in the Champions Trophy bronze medal shootout to Pakistan. Players like Kanwalpreet Singh, Bimal Lakra, etc. must be dropped from the team as they are not playing properly. We want to do something to make hockey as popular as cricket in India and also among the NRI community in the world. I think hockey players do not get even 10% credit (in monetary terms as well as media popularity) as compared to their cricketing counterparts for their contributions towards our country's national game. We will have to recognise the hockey players' hard work, dedication and do whatever it takes to boost their morale up for international victories.

I have seen the various comments in the guest book. It seems that most of us are willing to help Indian hockey monetarily and also in terms of time and effort. Many of us want full information (i. e., contact address, email, phone number, etc.) of the current Indian team. I think we should unite and plan something for the upliftment of the Indian hockey team.

My idea is to start communication between all those who are interested in supporting in either way (monetarily and/or time and effort). We should directly contact the Indian team players and find out their views on how we can be helpful to boost their morale.

We should also contact Bollywood stars to organise something at various places to popularise Indian hockey. I was happy to read that prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has just announced 100% income tax relief for industries that contribute in building sports infrastructure (though I am afraid that there will be more contributions to cricket, but anyway). Let us get together and do something. Once again, congratulations to the Indian hockey team for their great show in the India-Pakistan match on August 22nd.

Your analysis of Sportstar's content and preferences is amazing. As it is done with precision and in an analytical way, none of the points you raised could be countered by anybody. This is the bane of Indian Olympic sports that it lacks support from the media. Indian sports media is often directionless, emotional and sensational, rather than supportive, sustainable and objective.

For further clarity of the subject of Sportstar content, I would like to take this opportunity to inform that its other component, the daily newspaper Hindu, is doing justice to all sports. It is the only newspaper in India to send its correspondents to junior and senior nationals of all sports. What, then, prevents them from according the same importance to all sports in Sportstar magazine is beyond comprehension.

I know one thing for sure. Had the media been alert and focussed on Indian women's hockey and put a check on arrogant hockey officials, women's hockey could have done wonders. But no one cares for women's hockey in India. As a result of this, Indian women hockey players are treated shabbily and humiliated at every turn by a group of petty, sadistic officials. It pains. It hurts. For obvious reasons, I am a freelancer, not a hardcore professional journalist, but I know many sports journalists in India who are not at all bothered about women's hockey.

I am very happy to discover this website. I live in France, and I just came back from the Champions Trophy in Amsterdam. I had represented France during the second World Youth Festival organised by the FIH. It was a great experience. I meet two participants from India, two boys who was very funny.

I enjoyed your site very much. It is a pleasure to see countries like India and Pakistan play magical hockey.

I am a little disappointed at the negative and pessimistic color that the articles on this site are sometimes painted in. Even though India had a bad patch for a few years, it is coming back in style. Dhanraj and his boys are really impressing everybody in Europe. In fact, the Dutch were out and out supporting the Indian team throughout the tournament. I was there and saw it live.

With Sahara pitching in on the sponsorship front, a lot of good things seem to be happening to Indian hockey. I think you should try to focus more on the positives of how to promote hockey, and stop lamenting the success and publicity of cricket. Cricket will have its own charm and hockey its own magnificence.

I think Indian hockey needs a foreign coach, and the IHF needs a president like Ashwini Kumar. Kick out Dhanraj Pillai as soon as possible. Don't send the Indian hockey team abroad until the team is fit for competition.

Have some perspective. If India wins against Pakistan, it is not as if we have won the Olympics or the World Cup, there are other teams in the competition as well. The media exposure and other facilities that Indian hockey players get, no other hockey players in the world get them. Look at what ex-India players have contributed to India, with a minimal of conveniences as compared to our present day players.

Fieldhockey TV was started in June/July of 2003, with the intention of supporting field hockey all over the world. Congratulations to Dhanraj Pillai for India winning the Asia Cup for the first time. I hope that K. P. S. Gill and Rajinder Singh will reconsider the policy of preferring aging or non-talented Sardarjis over excellent talents from rest of the India. They should accept the fact that the Sardarji era is over, and now others in India are equal to or better than them. Baljit Singh Dhillon, Baljit Singh Saini, Deedar Singh, and upto a limit Kanwalpreet Singh (opponents are utilising his legs to obtain penalty corners frequently) - let the selection committee have a rethink on such players.

The idea behind giving a talented player like Sandeep Michael minimal match time (the latest definition is 'preserving the player') is indigestable. Countries with less population such as Korea, Netherlands and Poland are performing to their potential for the simple reason that they field their possible best talent. Remember choice for these countries is far less than India, since there are less people to chose from, and most are soccer maniacs.

I watched the Indian hockey team play in the Asia Cup final in Kuala Lumpur. They were very good, and better than the Pakistanis. We, the Malaysian Sikhs, gave our moral support, banging on our big dhols all the way. I am one of the Malaysian Indians who number 2 million, with strong cultural and religious ties with the motherland. I was there providing support and garnering as many fans to watch every game that our Indian team played in the Asia Cup held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

I have only this to say that the Indian hockey team played unbelievable, magnificent, out-of-the-world hockey. This is not my opinion alone, but the entire Indian crowd that made up about 75% of the stadium were of a similar view. We knew India could win the Asia Cup from the way they played their earlier games. Every match was such a delight to watch. We could feel our blood pumping with every move the Indian hockey team made. It was like the 1982 Brazilian soccer team. Most of us agreed that we will never forget this match for a long time. We Malaysian Indians are proud of this victory, and I assure you that crowds will come in droves whenever India plays.

The team must not rest on its laurels. The journey to the top is just beginning, and it will never end. It is an ongoing battle of continuous improvement. We must win the World Cup and the Olympics, it is achievable. The only concern I felt was that the defence tends to slip up too often. Beef up the defence, and the World Cup is India's. We Indians all over the world will support that goal, and will take pride on seeing that happen.

Not only in hockey, India has the ability to excel as world power in any sport, as long as there is proper organisation and less politicking. I hope in soccer India can do the same. Baichung Bhutia is one of top players in the Malaysian league.

Congratulations Indian Hockey Team! Syabas! It is the best Indian hockey team ever assembled in my opinion, and I believe they can win the Olympics and the World Cup. Bharatiyahockey.org is an excellent site on our national sport. I surf it almost daily (but unfortunately you do not provide a daily update). I am from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, a region where hockey is very popular among tribals. Jaipal Singh Munda, captain of the 1928 Indian Olympic team, was from Ranchi. We used to play hockey during my school and college days - with bamboo/kadamb sticks!

I went through the article "The Prose and Poetry of Sport" by Rajdeep Sardesai. It reflects the feelings of our countrymen who love hockey - unfortunately this mostly includes people in their late 30s and older. I would like to reproduce a paragraph from Rajdeep's article, but put in my own memories. Here goes ...

"But there is just one occasion where I have been simply shattered by the emotional roller-coaster ride that sports can take one on. That was the day when India bowed out of the 1976 Olympic Games hockey competition, after losing to Australia in the tie-breaker. Chand Singh missed the stroke. The memories of that match are still fresh in my mind. I recall staying up all night along with my father - a die-hard hockey fan - to hear the running commentary on Akashvani by Jasdev Singh and Surojit Sengupta, which was broadcast at around 4 am in India. It was a match that India had to win to make it to the semi-finals, but did not. It took us several days to recover."
