Laudable effort. Keep it up. It may be a good idea to have live match coverage, as they do in cricket. Even though one would want to encourage hockey as the first Indian sport, one is still not clear how to do it.

The Indian hockey team is best team in the world, but sending a B-team for the Azlan Shah Cup was not a good decision. There were not enough senior players in the team, and the last-place finish was really a great disappointment for Indians.

If anybody knows the email address of Gagan Ajeet Singh, please let me know. I would like to send email to Gagan, he is one of the best players in our Indian hockey team.

If India wants to be in the world's top 3 teams, India should have astroturf in all major cities. Junior teams should also be playing on astro-turf. India must have a foreign (European or Australian) coach because their coaches have good experience on how to play on astroturf. The Indians must learn how to play fast and aggressive hockey, both in the offence and in defence.

After India's poor performance in the Azlan Shah Cup, I thought some serious thoughts will be given by the IHF towards the selection of some of the players. The Indian team for Holland series left me wondering whether criteria other than performance got some players into the team.

Nothing personal against the players, but likes of Arjun Halappa, Len Ayyappa and Sandeep Michael should not have been included for the series against Holland. Len Ayyappa is the penalty corner specialist, but is yet to show his expertise even after a few tournaments. Halappa should show better positional playing, and should not be caught at the wrong place for the ball, same is the case with Sandeep Michael, both continue to miss sitters.

In the test series, Vikram Pillai got the award for the Player of the Series. Only observation on him is that he holds the ball too much, this gives the opponents time to mark their men. Same with Ignace Tirkey. The work of the midfield is to organize moves, but they make jalebis on the field, and soon 2-3 opposing players are around them. This forces the midfielder to either back pass the ball or commit a foul, thus handing over possession to the opponents.

Regarding Doordarshan coverage, I think the Hyderabad cameramen have soft corners for the referees. At crucial times, they used to show the referees instead the ball. There should be better sense of anticipation or foresight on what scene to show and what not to show.

I am a national player (goalkeeper), and a fan of Dhanraj Pillai and goalkeeper A. B. Subbaiah. The selection procedure is very bad in India, that's why the Indian team is not winning matches consistently at the international level. Many of the selected players are recommended players. I suggest that the IHF should have a sincere and transparent selection policy if they want to see the Indian flag flying high again in world hockey, as it used to in the past.

I am a very big fan of Indian hockey, especially of Dhanraj Pillai. It is because of Dhanraj that I started watching hockey. My contribution will be to make hockey gain more popularity. And when I start earning, I would help monetarily, as well as devote time and effort.

I am a big fan of Dhyan Chand. Though I have never seen Dhyan Chand, being a sports lover and a big hockey supporter, I like and respect him. I got connected to your site through khel.com. They have his autobiography and there your site was mentioned.

Well, I can't end without telling that I had a lesson "The Wizard" in my English textbook, and I was the only one in my whole class who liked it a lot.

Dear friends, I want to tell you that I am a supporter of Indian hockey team. Though the hockey team is Punjab-dominated, the players are all Indians, and play for national pride.

You are unnecessarily fuelling the case of Dhanraj Pillai. That is not good. Though I believe there is no Indian player of the calibre of Dhanraj Pillai, I feel he should refrained from going to the media to present his case.

We all know that cricket is south-dominated, as we keep seeing many partialities against Northern players. However, nobody talks about that in the media.

So don't go after Dhanraj's case in this manner. One who plays well and is fit for a particular tournament will find a berth in team. Again, you please don't write like that. It is anti-national thinking. Thanks.

Dear Friends:
Since I was a child and played hockey, my coach gave me a light blue T-shirt with a number three, a T-shirt different from the red ones of my teammates. This was because I was the goalkeeper, so I had to wear a different colour compared to the other boys.

Later, for Christmas, I received a hockey book talking about world hockey, and it mentioned that India was a powerful team, almost unbeatable at every Olympics. Since that moment, I always dreamed to be like an Indian player when I was playing with that blue T-shirt.

In 1992, India played in a 4-nation tournament in Madrid, the other teams being Spain, Egypt and Argentina. When I first saw the magical skills of Dhanraj Pillai, I was hypnotised. Since then I have always been supporting India, as I did recently in the Madrid Pre-Olympic Qualifier.

Last Saturday, one of my dreams came true, of seeing a hockey match between India and Pakistan (although the result was not what I dreamed of). Anyway, I very much enjoyed the efforts of the Indian players, my heroes.

Later on, Sandeep Michael gave me his T-shirt, a gift that I will never forget because his present reminds me of my childhood days, 15 years ago, when I first started playing with that light blue number three T-shirt. Thanks Sandeep, I will continue to follow your progress, and be sure that I´m going to support India as always.

Beat Pakistan please, every time. Good luck at the Athens Olympics, I am hoping for a Spain-India Olympic hockey final.

It is really sad that Dhanraj Pillai has not been picked again in the Indian team. With this, I am losing interest in Indian hockey.

Why is it that time and again the Indian Hockey Federation tries to throw away its best players? Something must be done soon, otherwise we will all lose out on our national game.

In the 4-nation Hockey Challenge, India performed well in the game against Australia in Sydney (2-2 draw). It's a wonderful improvement from the previous games. I just hope they continue playing like this. It's a nice gift for Jugraj on his birthday. Luv, Hockey Girl 22.

It is time to sack Rajinder Singh as the coach of the national hockey team. A few victories over depleted Pakistani/South Korean sides in 2003 does not raise the stock of the Indian hockey team. They are just as pathetic as they have been in a long time. Teams like Holland, Germany, Australia continue to whip us.

As a diehard fan of Indian hockey, I find it very humiliating that we routinely keep getting beaten by second-tier teams like Malaysia, South Africa, Argentina, etc.

Why can't K. P. S. Gill and company see the wisdom in getting a new European coach? We need fresh perspective and brand new ideas. Dump the Asian style of play if it cannot fetch you consistency in results.

The present Indian team has players like Deepak Thakur, Gagan Ajeet, Baljeet Saini, Dileep Tirkey, Prabhjyot Singh, who on their day can win matches single-handedly. But Rajinder is not not doing any justice to their massive talent.

This is the worst time for Indian hockey. I am really disappointed by IHF's decision to omit Dhanraj Pillai. Now I lost my interest in Indian hockey. This is the last time I am visiting this home page. I was regularly keeping with up with Indian hockey since I was 10 years old.

Shame on you guys, who are playing with Indian people's interest just for their own selfish reasons.

I am a  from Hyderabad. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the Indian junior hockey team for winning the Asia Cup.

It is surprising to see that a player like Dhanraj has been dropped from the Olympic probables list. Despite having served the national team for 15 long years, Dhanraj is struggling to find a place in the team.

The IHF and the national coach should realise that Dhanraj is the Tendulkar of Indian hockey. Just as there can be no cricket team without Sachin, there can be no hockey team without 3-time Olympian Pillai. Due to Pillai's vast experience, his presence would definitely disturb the opposing teams, especially the European teams. Dhanraj creates goal scoring chances for other players.

I feel that coach Rajinder Singh does not want Dhanraj in the team because of  the Chennai airport incident, where a fearless Dhanraj dared to talk to the media. It is not a crime to share a victory with the Indian media. The other players were meek and afraid to talk to media as they felt the could be dropped from the team by coach Rajinder.

But Dhanraj is Dhanraj, no coach or official can dare to restrict him. He is the face of Indian hockey with over 400 internationals. By the way, how many internationals did Rajinder Singh play in? Then how can he think of dropping Dhanraj and other seniors like Dhillon, Saini and the mercurial Mukesh Kumar? I do hope that these seniors get a well-deserved chance to play in the Athens Olympics and and bring back a medal for India.

I am a rabid hockey fan since 1968. My other credentials are that I am a successful AYSO youth soccer (football) coach for the last 12 years. I gravitated to soccer since it was closest to hockey. I have won 7 championships in my little town in California.

Most champion hockey teams now play "football style" hockey. So I may be able to have interesting discussions on this topic in a field hockey chat group etc. I strongly feel that all Indian hockey players should play soccer & basketball in their free (leisure) time. It well help them with their hockey and tactics.

It is very surprising to see that our very own Dhanu bhai is not finding a place in the Indian Olympic team. This is clearly a case of dirty tricks being played by Indian hockey officials and coach Rajinder Singh.

With barely 3 months to go for the prestigious event in Athens, one is unable to understand why the IHF is in an 'experimentation' mode. Seniors play a crucial role in events like the Olympics. The juniors will definitely succumb to pressure in the big games. Seniors like Dhanraj, Saini and Dhillon know how to handle the pressure.

IHF chief K. P. S. Gill recently said that whoever had the potential to play the entire 70 minutes will be considered for the Olympics. I will ask a simple question - who the hell has the potential to play the entire 70 minutes in the Indian team?

It is the rolling substitution era, where we can use players for short spells. If Dhanraj is allowed to play for even 10 minutes, he can definitely create scoring chances. Even players from other countries do not play the entire 70 minutes.

I am really happy to see that Dhanraj is getting support from every corner of the world. Past differences should be ignored and seniors should be in the team for the betterment of Indian hockey.

India has long dominated the world of field hockey, and has won the most gold medals in the sport. India has not won a gold medal in field hockey since 1980. It is time for us to become dominant once again. Let us show Netherlands and the rest of the world what India is capable of. Rise to your rightful status as world champions in hockey. Jai Hind!

I have come into the cyber cafe directly after watching the IND-PAK match. The 1-6 loss inflicted on India was very depressing, and I required an outlet for the depression to escape. So here I am, writing in my favourite hockey site.

When will the Indian players and coaches realize the importance of quick release of ball? The half-line tends to stick with the ball like "a fly to jaggery". They should have learned from the Pakistanis, their quick passes always caught the Indians on the wrong foot. Our players can't think about passing the ball before unnecessarily moving the ball right and left 2-3 times and then giving the ball to opponents, when they are out of ideas and space.

If this is the kind of display the Indian team is going to give in Athens, I can't imagine the overwhelming drowning feeling I am going to get in August. Or, in a case of wishful thinking, the Indians are hiding their potential for the Olympics, and do not want to expose their plans till Athens.

In my view, a 85% fit Jugraj is better than the so-called drag flickers we have been experimenting with. Look at Sandeep Singh, nor he has scored from flicks, nor is he sure with his tackles or passes in the field. Also, Baljeet Singh Saini will make a huge difference in the midfield, I think there is still time to get him back. Can Bharatiyahockey.org pass on this to Mr. K. P. S. Gill?

The Indian team did not play as expected in the recently concluded Rabobank 4-nation hockey tournament in Amsterdam. The Indian players could not capitalise on the chances which came their way. In the first match against the Dutch, we missed at least 5 to 6 open chances. The Indian team should watch video replays of the Rabobank 4-nation tourney matches, and make sure that they do not repeat the same mistakes in the upcoming 4-nation tournament in Germany.

If they play this way in the Olympics, then they will stand no chance to finish among the medals. Though the present team has the potential to beat any team in the world, what is sorely needed is consistency. With not much time left for Athens, the team has to pull up its socks and see what went wrong.

I feel so full of josh whenever our national anthem is played before any international match. All the players should feel the same pride when they are playing for their country. Hope that BhartiyaHockey.org passes on this message to our players - Good luck India. Jeetna hai Olympic medal. Vapas lana hai desh ki shaan.

A post card to Mr. Subrato Roy
======================
Mr. Subrato Roy, please wake up. Throw the jerks Gill and Rajinder out. Both of them are eccentrics and demented fools. Your sponsorship money has gone down the drain. India lost all 4 matches in the Rabobank 4-nation tournament by a goal difference of 3 or more goals.

Please take some time off and see what Australian coach Terry Walsh has done to Holland. You may also note that though Pakistan has enough coaching talent, and it threw Tahir Zaman out and replaced him with Roelant Oltmans of Netherlands. And what followed next? Pakistan whipped India 6-1, and Holland beat India 3-0. Mr. Roy, 25 crores is a lot of money. Perhaps its time for Sahara to look at other less fortunate sports?

I am the kind of person who hopes against hope, and ends up sorely disappointed. I am, however, not betting on the Indian hockey team. I have grown wise.

Going by the current form and management strategies of the Indian hockey team, and the going-ons in the last couple of months, it would not take a genius to guess that the Indian hockey team is going to lose nearly all its matches. The only guess-work here would be the margin they of the losses.

Anyway, I hope I am proved wrong. God bless the Indian hockey management and the players. Please, please pray for the team.

Thanks for the opportunity to read about hockey. As an ex-Indian hockey player 1971-1974, and a US Olympian (1984), I would like to express my good wishes to the Indian team in Athens. A few comments, though, to improve Indian hockey:

1. Forget regional politics, religion and ethnic biases. If you hire a  foreign coach he will most probably neutral to such issues. Nothing to take away from Indian coaches, but the bias is automatically built in whether present or not - to which the public and media will jump upon.

2. The game has changed from the good old days when India & Pakistan dominated the game. Strategically the game has been changed to encourage other countries who have adopted the soccer-type formation, changing a few rules, and then of course the artificial surfaces that are faster and require more fitness.

3. Indian players need to know that in today's game where man-to-man marking is critical, one does not have the time nor space that their older mentors had to dribble 5 or 6 players before scoring. We PASS the ball to the OPEN man, and dribble only when we can't pass or no one is open. Indian and Pakistan players are noted for hanging onto the ball too long.

4. Remember that it is not that the Indian hockey standard is gone down but the standard of other countries has come up to overtake us.

5. If one watches Brazil play soccer, they play one-touch soccer, passing the ball around creating the openings. European hockey teams do the same and beat us. Australia is one of the great examples that we should look at, for they seem to blend the Asian and European styles well. We've got to pass the ball around, especially from the mid field - they are the brain of the team.

6. Physical fitness is a must when on artificial fields. Organised coaching camps on such surfaces should start early - ages 5-8 yrs - just like the European teams do. We tend to play street ball and develop great individual skills, but lack the team concept which is more important. We have so many good players, but we lack the cohesiveness of a good team.

Again! I WISH INDIA THE BEST IN THE 2004 OLYMPICS!!!!

Nothing new in India starting on a bad note.

When will the system of Indian hockey start teaching basics to our midfield? The way Vikram Pillai held on to the ball, it seemed that he wanted to elope with the ball. Someone must convey to him there are 10 other players whom he can pass the ball to. Instead, he passes the ball to the opponents!

Earlier, I had posted that a 85% fit Jugraj was better than the current crop of drag-flickers. I think I was correct about this; Sandeep Singh was responsible for an unnecessary goal in the very 2nd minute of the game.

Dhanraj Pillai, standing in front of the goal, tries to get a PC by trying to let the ball go through the opponent's legs for a foot foul, instead of taking a shot.

There was no feeding from the midfield to the forward line. If this is the way they will continue in the rest of the matches, my dream of seeing India win the Olympic hockey gold medal will remain but a dream.

Goalkeeper Adrian D'Souza gets credit for keeping the score at 1-3, it could have been a worse score otherwise.

The Indian management should not go with Sandeep Singh in the remaining matches. In the match against the Dutch, it was clear cut mistake of Sandeep which helped the Dutch take the lead. He is still not mature enough to play in the big occasions. After the goal, the morale of the team went down, resulting in India losing the match.

Dileep Tirkey is undoubtedly the best defender in the world. I hope he leads from the front and helps India win an Olympic medal.

It is bad to see National Game in tatters. I find that one of the major reasons behind this is politics. I would suggest that there should be an independent board for hockey as there is for cricket so that we can make it more competitive and throw politics out of the game to a very good extent.

Congratulations to the Indian hockey team for finally scoring some goals! Frankly, their performance with Netherlands was poor - they were running everywhere but the perimeter of the nets. Anyhow, as done on many occasions by Ginny (Gagan), he scored the only goal for that match.

Then last night's match against South Africa - although they didn't show more than 30 minutes of it, India played well. It felt like the matches they played while they were in Sydney earlier in the year. Congratulations again to the boys for playing superbly and scoring those excellent goals. All the best against Australia. Cheers! :)

India won the match against South Africa, but only after causing a few heart attacks to its fans. The midfield continues to perform poorly. After Dhanraj Pillai, Vikram Pillai too insists on taking slap shots instead of long stick shots. The slap shot does no good in the open field.

The midfield should learn from the 4th goal India scored - they relayed the ball quickly, the defence was caught on wrong foot and we had enough unmarked players in the striking circle (Deepak Thakur and Gagan Ajit). Congratulations for the win against South Africa, and best of luck for today's match against Australia.

In the Athens Olympics hockey competition, it seemed that Australia was playing with 12 players (11 with sticks and with a whistle and cards). International hockey needs to have qualified and impartial umpires at the highest level. South African umpire John Wright was far behind international hockey standards.

Yet another disappointment in the match against Australia. The team management and players must know that the hockey game has two halves of 35 minutes each. It seems that, like so often in the past, the players were happy and satisfied playing for 34 minutes in the second half.

Also, I feel that most of the Indian midfield and defence think of their opponents as their friends coming to garland them; they don't even stretch their arms to tackle them. The mindset of these polite players must be changed.

Some players like Arjun Halappa and Ignace Tirkey must understand their potential; when they do not have enough power in their hands, they must not try to scoop the ball.

Another big flaw is that once an Indian player is beaten by the opponent, he feels his job is finished. He doesn't want to make another attempt to get the ball. He feels that his task is finished and another man will do it; the other players think the same way too, and soon they find the ball in their goalpost.

I have been watching and playing hockey since 4 years of age. My father played with the legend, the late Sir Dhyan Chand. I only can say that it was disgusting hockey played by India in the last 1 minute of the match against Australia.

Indians always seem to commit the same mistakes. Hope one day we can overcome our nerves and do justice to Indian hockey.

I don't know how much of these comments will be edited. I don't know if the team management, players, and the IHF officials go through this site, which I believe has lots of good thoughts and suggestions. If they work on these and come out with a gist of all the suggestions, I believe a lot of issues can be solved.

The Indian team is conceding too many soft goals. The defenders do not have anticipation. In at least two of the goals that Australia scored, the attackers were unmarked as if they were strolling in a "company bagh." The defenders are letting the opponents come in too deep before tackling them.

Dileep Tirkey seems to have a fondness for scooping the ball and hitting long balls which to my mind are 0% shots, especially when players like Gagan Ajit cannot trap the ball (at least on 5 occasions). The only thing such long shots do is give possession to the other team, for them to build their own attack. Seldom have these shots ended up with Indian players. Instead the Indians must build the attacks.

Going by the Indian team's play, the best they can hope for is a 7th or 8th position, or pray for some miracles to happen. I know there must be a lot of restrictions which the editor of this site must be having, but I feel the dignity of this site till date is putting the comments to their originality. Many, many thanks for doing this great job.

During the India-Argentina hockey match at the Athens Olympics, it was good to see our talented players dribbling the ball like you have never seen before. But luck was not in India's favour. I think we need to ponder over a few things as far as the players are concerned:

1. There is lack of team spirit. When you score a brilliant goal, it's time to celebrate, but our players would not hug and cheer each other. They should realise that they need to boost the morale of each other. One goal can change the game, and specially the morale of the players.

2. When our talented players like Dileep Tirkey and Viren Rasquinha got hit and lay on ground suffering, what were the other players doing? Except for Dhanraj, they were strolling on the field. This is the time to show support to your fellow team member who has lost a few of his limbs and bones playing for Team India.

3. Last, but not the least, when the National Anthem is being sung by the Indian team, there is no excitement felt, and no effort put towards the singing the Anthem. I remember Geet Sethi and Leander Paes stating proudly that the biggest moment in their life has been standing on the podium after winning the gold, and singing/listening to the National Anthem. It is a proud moment for anyone to represent India at the international level. So respect the Indian Anthem and get motivation from it.

I believe the poor performance in Athens is very much to do with the psychology of the players and lack of team spirit. Is there someone in the IHF team who can work towards building team spirit in the Indian hockey team?

The Indian team did not let in more goals, and I congratulate them for this! I believe in miracles, and I was hoping for one in the match against Pakistan; sadly, it did not materialise. If India had beaten Pakistan, India would have been in the top 6 in the world, and thus would have qualified for the Champions Trophy.

You people at BharatiyaHockey.org should send these comments to the IHF; maybe then they will get some sense into their minds.

What was the need for taking Sandeep Singh to the Olympics if he took only 2 penalty corners, that too without bothering the scorers. We all were witness to his potential in the field, he was running like a puppy behind the ball without anticipating where to intercept and how to tackle the offending party.

Someone should tell Vikram Pillai which way to attack; 90% of the time, he passed the ball back after unnecessarily holding it.

Our players have a fascination for over-dribling, even in their own D. Instead of first-time clearances, they tend to hold on to the ball, and then commit silly fouls leading to penalty corners or free hits just outside D. The main culprits in this are our halves - Ignace, Arjun and Viren.

The midfield forgot their job of feeding the forwards; they just hit to each other, dribbled when not required, and gave easy possession to the attackers. Opponents did not have to trouble themselves taking the ball all the way to Indian D, the Indian players did the job for them.

Most of the time, the full-backs were hitting near their own 25-yard line, and then committing some foul that would give possession to the attackers at the top of the 'D'. What was the utility of the long hits taken by Dilip. Firstly, he takes too much time, and then the hits were mostly on the right flank, with the Indian forwards having to take the ball on their wrong side, sandwiched between the sideline and marking man. The forwards never had the open space to make a constructive move.

I am still unable to judge the strategy of the Indian team; no attacks or penalty corners, just plain possession hockey, which is of no use if the score reads 3-0 against you at the end of 70 minutes. There were so many mistakes committed by the players which is not expected from internationals.

Now waiting for the autopsy, and then some heads to roll.

Well, the Indian hockey team has shown the entire world what it is made of - lack of consistency, lack of any competency whatsoever and full of defeat! The Indian players start slowing down and have already given up towards the end of every second half.

But that is the most crucial time of the match, where you cannot let your guard down! You do not win until the final whistle has blown! That is what the Indian players need to learn and understand. How else did they lose to Australia, New Zealand, and draw with Argentina? Had these results been avoided, we would have been watching India play in the final.

On another note, you boys did make it this far, and not every nation can qualify for the Olympics. All the best for the upcoming tournaments. Cheers!

Sack all the office-bearers at the IHF, only then will Indian hockey revive. If the players can get sacked for poor performance, why not the administrators?

The same set of IHF officials have been running the show for this long. If they cannot impact performance, they have no business to be still in office.

It's all over now in Athens, courtesy the same old mistakes. No one can understand what happened to our Indian team. Every Indian hockey fan was hoping for a podium finish, but the Indians flattered to deceive once again.

In the match against Holland, the entire team had to suffer for the mistake of Sandeep Singh. It was really shocking to see that Sandeep could not stop a simple back pass, which ultimately resulted in a goal for the Dutch. Such a pass can be easily stopped by a seventh class school boy.

The performance of Adrian was superb; otherwise India would have easily conceded a dozen more goals. Dilip Tirkey, Viren, Dhanraj and Vikram were the best players in the team. They gave their 100%, but all the 11 players on the field have to give cent percent to get a good result. I think Dhanraj is easily the best player in the current Indian team; no one can match him.

The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) should now stop their cat-and-mouse game which they have been playing for years with the players and coaches. The IHF has made scapegoats of many coaches like Bhaskaran, Cedric, etc.

The Indian team to the Athens Olympics should have included Kanwalpreet Singh and Bimal Lakra; both are very good players. Kanwalpreet has played for a long time with Dileep Tirkey, and because of this they combine well. India has very talented players, but often they are not selected in the national team. Why?

India performed well in the beginning of the Indo-Pak hockey series, but didn't sustain it for the rest of the series. I'm extremely happy that India won the last match of the series, and for the other matches that they won. I hope India does even better next time.

I do think, though, that Deepak, Prabhjyot and Gagan should've been played in the Indo-Pak series.

As for support for Indian hockey, we recently formed a Sports and Recreation Centre (SPARC) in Mumbai. It is a non-profit, voluntary organisation, and our aim is to build good persons via sport. We are initially starting with hockey and football.

Hi! I have been associated with a national magazine called DASH. I look after the sports beat in the magazine. I played a lot of sports during my school and college days, including representing my school at the national level in Hockey (Eastern Zone).

Looking at the downfall of Indian hockey for such a long period of time is extremely painful. Being a journalist, the best way for me to contribute to Indian hockey is through my writings.

Comments:
The frenzy for hockey that was created in the media and public since India’s heroic 7-4 victory over Pakistan in 2003 has dissipated. My mantra to take Indian hockey ahead is

Discipline

Unfortunately, we Indians have never understood the importance of discipline in sports (both on and off the pitch). Gill may be the worst administrator on earth, but players should maintain discipline. That means, if Dhanraj has been asked not to speak to the media, he must stay quiet.

When our players are given an opportunity to speak, they talk too much. Case in point is Deepak Thakur (2003) and Pargat Singh (1992). Both claimed India will win at least a bronze in the Olympics. Do Dutch or German players ever make such statements? They don’t talk, they ACT!

Dhanraj is one of those loud-mouths too. Indiscipline has to be punished, no matter who is involved. The message ought to be clear - show results against the European teams, and then blow your trumpets.

I don't want to think of better administration in hockey. That's just not possible in India. Tomorrow, this Gill will go and another Gill will come. But poor administration should not be counted as an alibi for defeat. If that was the case, how come Pakistan reached the 1990 World Cup final or won the 1994 World Cup? Pakistan has consistently been in the top 4 of major competitions. Is their framework better than India's?

Athleticism

We ought to learn from Netherlands and Germany, who are one-touch teams. They move the ball around so fast, it’s a challenge even to the eyes. Off-the-ball running is something our boys never do. Consequently, the opposition can then not only control the pace of the game, but also focus on just a limited number of gaps they need to plug.

Be it cricket or hockey, one reason why India never delivers consistently is very few of its players can do justice to the word “Athlete”. Few players are good at few things, no one is an all-rounder. Today's players need to be robust and agile. Only then does one-touch play and off-the-ball running come into play.

Foreign Coach

Whatever one might say, I feel Rach has done a splendid job for India considering all the constraints he had. The defence has sharpened immensely. We need a non-Asian coach, someone who can give the boys a good caning on their backside if they don’t perform well.

Indian coaches can never command the desired respect from players, and neither can they enforce discipline they way a foreigner can.

Confidence

The coach must encourage players to do hard work, instead of finding an easy way out. Rach has put in efforts here. Players should believe they are as good as the opposition.

Each time the ball comes into our D-area, our defenders till now were merely scooping the ball into the opposition area. For all the stickwork that we feel India has, India's defence/midfield is scared to take opposing forwards/halfline head-on.

Prabodh Tirkey has played fantastically in this Champions trophy. We need cool, collected players like him who can play the ball out of the defence, instead of gifting it to the opposition.

Game Analyst

Players need to know their development areas, so that they can work on their weaknesses when their careers are in their infancy.

Target Holland NOT Pakistan

Need I say more?

I am a big fan of the Indian hockey team, but I am very sad on the treatment meted out to the senior players. Is there any way we can know where they are, and what they are doing. Also, please update your website with the current members of the Indian team and their photographs.
