- For the second consecutive time, India had to go through a qualifying tournament to be
eligible for the World Cup. India finished 3rd in the qualifying tournament in Poznan
(Poland), to earn the right to play in Sydney.
- India had a relatively good World Cup, under new coach Cedric D'Souza. India lost
expectedly to Netherlands 2-4 and to Germany 1-2, but won against Asian Games champions South
Korea 2-0 and against Belgium 4-2. The only match India drew was a 2-2 tie against South
Africa.
- In the classification matches for the 5-8 positions, India beat Argentina 6-3
(tie-breaker) and
England 1-0 to come 5th in the World Cup. This enabled India to qualify for the elite
Champions Trophy in 1995 in Berlin, where India would hold on to the 5th place.
- In the semi-finals, Holland beat hosts Australia 3-1, while Pakistan beat Germany 6-4. The two finalists of the 1990 World Cup thus met again in 1994.
This time it
was Pakistan's turn to win, when they beat Holland 5-4 in the
tie-breaker to lift the World Cup for a record fourth time.
- Shahbaaz Ahmed was declared Player of the Tournament for the second
consecutive World Cup. Belgium won the Fairplay Trophy.
Penalty corner specialist Taco van den Honert of Holland was the top goal scorer with 11
goals in the tournament.
- Coach Abdul Rasheed Jr. of Pakistan achieved the unique feat of winning the
World Cup both as a player (1971) and as a coach (1994) - the only such
instance in World Cup history.
